Aegon 2016 review

HIGH-quality tennis made a return to Carisbrooke Tennis Club in 2016 in the form of the National Aegon league.

For the first time in several years, our men’s Aegon 1st team competed in the national stages of the Aegon competition following their promotion in the 2015 campaign.

And we made the most of these top-class fixtures by ensuring our three home games were well-supported with fans, beer and barbecues!

The season finished with Carisbrooke safely in sixth place, ensuring our national-league status for another jaunt in 2017.

We won 26 rubbers and 31 sets along the way in the face of some fierce competition – a creditable result I’m sure you’ll all agree! Congratulations to all the players who represented Carisbrooke; you did the club proud.

Meanwhile, the men’s Aegon 2nd team also had a successful 2016 campaign by earning promotion in the Team Tennis league.

The Chris Poli-captained team finished in the runner-up spot to gain promotion to Open Men’s Division One (Leicestershire) for 2017.

Their results were as follows:

  • Sunday, April 17 (5pm): Away at Loughborough University (Dan Maskell Tennis Centre): L 4-8 (three of the matches lost on tie-breaks!)
  • Sunday, April 24 (midday): HOME v Westfields: W 8-4 
  • Sunday, May 8 (10am): HOME v Leicester Forest East: Cancelled (LFE have withdrawn from the league)
  • Sunday, June 5 (10am): HOME v Hamilton: W 8-4
  • Saturday, July 2 (1.30am): Away at Stoney Stanton: W 8-4
