It was another successful evening for Carisbrooke Tennis Club at the 2019 Tennis Leicestershire annual awards with players and teams praised for their efforts on the court last season.
The event was held at the home of Leicester Tigers, Welford Road, on Monday, March 4, with Carisbrooke well-represented by several attendees on the night.
A year after the club won the coveted Club of the Year title, Carisbrooke walked away with several gongs from the packed conference room.
Our men’s first team won the Team of the Year award jointly with the Loughborough ladies’ first team (pictured, above).
Carisbrooke’s first-string men’s squad were praised after they impressively made the National Club League national finals in Bournemouth as well as clinching the county summer Premier League doubles title for an unprecedented third season in a row and the fifth time in six years.
The club’s talented junior player Edie Witcombe was part of the Leicestershire girls’ under-12s side that scooped the County Team of the Year award after they were crowned national champions in 2018.
Club stalwart Paul Hammond was a member of the side that earned the Veterans Team of the Year gong after his county over-70s squad were also national champions last season.
There were also team awards for Carisbrooke sides who did well in their campaigns in the 2018 term. The winter men’s fourth team, skippered by Andy Bayford, won Division 11, while the aforementioned men’s summer first team clinched the Premier League crown again. The ladies’ veterans first team picked up silverware for securing the summer doubles Division One title.
Congratulations were also due for club members Daniella Page and Louie Fletcher who were nominated in the Junior Girl of the Year and Junior Boy of the Year categories.
Great Britain’s Fed Cup captain and five-team former British ladies’ number 1 Anne Keothavong was this year’s special guest.
The former World number 48 was interviewed about her career by Leicestershire county tennis legend and fellow ex-pro Mark Cox.
