Funeral of Linda Harris

Gene and Linda

It is with a very heavy heart that we must announce the sad news of the death of a long-standing and much-loved member of Carisbrooke Tennis Club.

Linda Harris passed away in the early hours of last Monday morning aged just 69 years old after a long battle with illness.

Many members will know Linda as the loving and supportive wife of club stalwart Gene Harris, but before injuries and ill-health intervened Linda was a talented tennis player in her own right, representing the county and captaining the Carisbrooke ladies’ first team for several years during her heyday.

A talented sportswoman all-round, Linda was a PE teacher and was also selected to play for the county at hockey.

She worked as a PE teacher for many years at a school in Coalville before finishing her teaching career at Leicester High School in London Road.

Linda and Gene, who have a son Jon, met at a mixed doubles match in Ashby and they were married for 40 years.

Despite struggling with ill-health in recent years, Linda was always keen to continue supporting Carisbrooke and was seen at many a club finals’ day to support the players.

Linda’s funeral will take place at Great Glen Crematorium, in 9 London Road, Great Glen, Leicestershire, LE8 9DJ, this Friday, February 16, at 1.30pm.

It will be followed by a gathering back at Carisbrooke’s clubhouse for refreshments.

No flowers please, but people can make donations for either the county hospice charity LOROS, Marie Curie Cancer Care or Macmillan Cancer Support, all of which supported Linda and Gene through some really tough times over the past few years.

There will be a donation box at the funeral service or people can make out a cheque to either of the charities and post it to funeral directors AJ Adkinson & Son, at 12 London Road, Oadby, LE2 5DG, or people can donate online at

The club’s thoughts are with Gene and his family during this very sad time.
